Support

This area is of great importance to the patients, carers and supporters of Andrea’s Gift.

If you think that it might help to talk to someone who has an appreciation of what you are going through, please contact
Carol Robertson and she will put you in touch with a person in a similar situation.

We have a number of patients and carers who are willing to talk either by telephone, email or face to face (where possible) to help you through the dark times.

How should I feel?

When you or a family member receive a brain tumour diagnosis, everyone close will be affected in some way, each person will have a different way of coping and dealing with the practical and emotional issues they face.  It is perfectly normal to feel sad, angry, depressed, in denial or some other emotion, remember that there is no right or wrong way to feel.

One lady who is involved with Andrea's Gift was able to express her feelings through writing.  She wanted to share her work and we are delighted to publish it via the link below.

This is a very powerful and emotional piece of work, written at a low period in her journey with this disease.  Janet wants you to know that she now feels differently and more positively about life and the way she is managing the condition.

She would like to share her feelings and emotions and hopes that this account may help others to understand a little more about how this disease can affect a patient.  Janet's Story.

Support for You

There are currently two support groups running in the
Leeds area.

Brain Tumour Support Group

This is a group that meets from 6.30 to 8.30 on the first Tuesday every second month (February, April, June, August, October and December).  The group meets in the Robert Ogden Centre, St James University Hospital and is run
by the Neuro Oncology Nurse Specialist, Samantha Wilson and the Neuro Oncology Occupational Therapist, Kathy Thompson.

Speakers from different areas of care including reiki, aromatherapy and massage
through to practical speakers from Social Services, Job Centre and insurance companies come along to the meetings to provide practical information for patients and carers.

It is also a good place for carers and patients to simply meet others who are facing similar experiences.

There are also two social events each year – a summer BBQ and a Christmas party which are both funded by Andrea’s Gift.

Getting There

Getting There is a self help group that meets on a monthly basis and provides a network of support for carers who have experienced the loss of a close family member to a brain tumour.

The group is informal and friendly and meets on the second Tuesday of every month at different locations around Leeds.

We are also in the process of getting a group of young people together aged 16 to 25.

If you would like more information on any group, please contact Carol at Andrea’s Gift.  If you know of any other support groups in the Yorkshire region and would like to add your group on this page then please contact Carol and we may be able to add your details to this page.

Financial Grants

From time to time Andrea's Gift is able to award a brain tumour patient with a small financial grant (£200 maximum).  Please follow the link to the Status Grant Form to see if you qualify.  All applications are subject to the Andrea's Gift Board of Trustees' agreement and their decision is final and not open for debate.
